Huaraz

When the sun dies, the sky turns orange and the peaks of the snow covered mountains appear to burn, highlighting the beauty of the nearby nestling towns. Night falls without hurry in the Callejón de Huaylas; then the soft twinkling of the stars and the narrow trails, robust mountains and restless flow of the river fall into shadow and calm the lakes.

The Callejon de Huaylas is located in Huaráz, department of Ancash, at more than 400 kms. north of Lima. A striking scenery of wild country, a colorful valley formed by the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Negra between which runs the powerful river, the río Santa, watering the fields of a string of picturesque villages dotted along its banks.
This land of high peaks is a favorite among climbers from all over the world, in the Callejon de Huaylas (Huaráz, Ancash) there are 35 peaks that are more than 6000 mts. high, among them there is Huascarán – which with its 6,768 mts. is the highest snow – covered peak in Peru, and the second in America after Aconcagua.

Huascarán and Alpamayo, form part of the highest tropical mountain range on the planet, known as the Cordillera Blanca not only for their everlasting snow capped peaks but for the chemical make up of the rocks of quartz and felspar.
